Media

Media is an important tool of communication. It is a platform which allows a free flow of information from all corners of the world. It is a tool that can be used to create awareness, educate and even entertain us.

Through creating, making, editing and analysing students will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to become active and critical audiences of the mass media whilst developing their ability to work independently on both creative and academic projects.

The Heys Media department believes that students deserve a broad and ambitious Media curriculum, which develops essential Media skill and knowledge and ignites curiosity about the Media Industry.

Our Media Curriculum will give students the opportunity to:

  • Develop detailed knowledge, of a range of media industries, media forms and specific media products as well as how a range of media theories can be applied to them.
  • Develop the skills to use the knowledge they have gained regarding media theory to analyse unseen media products.
  • Develop the practical production skills required to create original media products in a range of different media forms including online media, audio-visual and print media.
  • Develop their ability to analyse media texts and articulate their ideas in writing.
  • Develop the ability to read the complex messages communicated by the media and have the ability to question the intent of media producers, distinguish between ideological viewpoints and identify political bias in the media.
  • Develop valuable transferable skills such as critical thinking, analysis, research, planning, skills of enquiry and evaluation, practical skills, creativity, time management and essay writing skills.
